About the Performer

Liang Yu, mezzo-soprano, is a 5th-year PhD student in physics, specializing in the detection of exoplanets. She is a native of Pretoria, South Africa, where she studied violin and classical singing from a young age. She appears regularly in opera productions, performing most recently as the Old Lady (Candide) with the MIT Chamber Chorus, and as Nicklausse and The Voice (Les contes d'Hoffmann) with the Midwest Institute of Opera. She was an alto soloist in the MIT Chamber Chorus's performance of Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb, and has also sung in numerous opera scenes both here at MIT and in the Florida VOICE Project under the direction of renowned baritone Sherrill Milnes. She will appear as a soloist again in the MIT Chamber Chorus's upcoming Musica Russica concert in late April, and as Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) in Luke Housner's LAH-SOW intensive vocal coaching workshop in June. Liang is an Emerson Voice Scholar and is currently studying with Kerry Deal.
