Composer Kathryn Salfelder (b. 1987) engages late-Medieval and Renaissance polyphony in conversation with 21st-century techniques; she borrows liberally and literally from chansons, motets, and masses, as well as more generally from Renaissance-era forms and structures. Her music has been recognized by the Minnesota Orchestra Composers’ Institute, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, ASCAP/CBDNA Frederick Fennell Prize, Ithaca College Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize, and the United States Air Force Gabriel Award.
Kathryn has been commissioned by the Boston Musica Viva, Albany Symphony, American Bandmasters Association, United States Air Force Band – Washington D.C., and New York Virtuoso Singers, and her music has been featured in three hundred concerts at the nation’s leading universities and conservatories. Two of her wind band works, Cathedrals and Crossing Parallels, are published by Boosey & Hawkes and have been performed abroad in eleven countries.
Kathryn serves as Lecturer in Music Theory at MIT, where she teaches in the 21M.051-301-302 theory sequence. In her spare time, she can be found realizing figured bass lines and dabbling at the organ.
