About the Performers

Emily Hu is a first-year undergraduate student at MIT pursuing a degree in biological engineering. She was raised in Lexington Kentucky, where she studied piano under the mentorship of Dr. Irina Voro, a piano faculty member at the University of Kentucky. Her interest in piano was kindled at the age of five when she took her first lessons with Grace Anderson and has since then had the privilege of learning with countless teachers and mentors, including Miao Hui Lin and Nancy Stelter. Emily has participated in a variety of orchestral programs outside of her solo music by serving as the principal pianist for Kentucky’s All-State Symphony Orchestra in 2022 and the Central Kentucky Youth Symphony Orchestra (CKYO) from 2021 to 2023. Some past honors include performing as a soloist with CKYO as a winner of the 2020 Borchardt Concerto Competition, Third Prize in the American Protégé 2021 International Piano and Strings Competition, and a feature by violinist Ray Chen as part of the #PlayWithRay virtual contest.

At MIT, she is currently studying piano with Marilyn Roth, faculty member and piano chair of New England Conservatory Preparatory School, as part of the Emerson and Harris Scholarship Program for Private Study. She is also part of MIT’s Chamber Music Society, and in her free time enjoys reading and coming up with new concoctions in the kitchen.

About the Emerson/Harris Program for Private Study

Funded by the late Mr. Cherry L. Emerson, Jr. (SM, 1941) in response to an appeal from Associate Provost Ellen T. Harris (Class of 1949 Professor Emeritus of Music), the Emerson/Harris Program offers merit-based financial awards for private study in music to students of outstanding achievement on their instruments in classical, jazz or world music. Each academic year, the Emerson/Harris Program awards Scholarships and Fellowships to nearly fifty students who commit to a full year’s study and participate in the musical life of MIT. Private teacher selections, made in consultation with the music faculty, may include instructors from MIT staff and throughout Greater Boston.
