About Tony Zhang
A native of Los Angeles, Tony Zhang (b. 1997) is currently a second-year undergraduate in physics. Since he began studying piano at the age of 7 with Li Wang, Tony has accumulated numerous honors and accolades. Notably, he performed Claude Debussy’s Jardins sous la pluie at Carnegie Hall at the invitation of the American Fine Arts Festival. More recently, he was awarded first place at the Audrey Thayer Piano Competition for a virtuosic rendition of Prokofiev’s first sonata. He has attended masterclasses with such artists as John Perry, Mina Perry, Luiz de Moura-Castro and Leonel Morales.

Tony also enjoys fruitful collaborations as a chamber musician, having performed piano trios by Mendelssohn and Arensky through the MIT Chamber Music Society, and as a collaborative pianist, accompanying countless instrumentalists over the years. Outside of performance, he has developed an interest in composition and conducting.

When not laboring toward his degree or perfecting measure 33 of the first movement of his Beethoven sonata, Tony can be found leading the MIT Association of Taiwanese Students as co-president or dancing (poorly) with the MIT Asian Dance Team.

Tony would like to thank instructor David Deveau for two years of valuable mentorship and unflagging encouragement. He would also like to thank all his piano teachers, past and present, for their wisdom and guidance throughout the years: Li Wang, Elena Makarova, and Gisele and Fabio Witkowski; his friends for their continued maintenance of his sanity; and his family for their years of enthusiastic support.
