About the Performer

Claire Cheng is a fourth-year undergraduate at MIT studying computer science and music. Ever since she began piano lessons at age five, music has always been a huge part of her life, through piano solo and chamber music programs as well as playing flute and participating in state honor bands and conferences. In middle school and high school, she studied with Katherine Lee in the Bay Area, and has performed in masterclasses with Hans Boepple, Sonia Leong, Eteri Andjaparidze, and Mia Chung. She has also won awards in regional and state-level competitions such as the Pacific Musical Society Competition, MTAC Northern California Piano Solo Competition, San Francisco Chopin Competition for Young Pianists, and the Henry and Carol Zeiter Piano Competition.

Currently, she studies with Yukiko Sekino and has participated in the Emerson Scholarship Program for the past two years. She has also performed with the Chamber Music Society program and MIT Symphony Orchestra (on flute). Outside of classical music, she enjoys arranging and recording her own covers of popular songs and movie soundtracks. You can check them out on her YouTube channel, marniescastle. Outside of music in general, she dances and currently choreographs for the MIT Asian Dance Team and MIT MissBehavior.

About the Emerson/Harris Program for Private Study

Funded by the late Mr. Cherry L. Emerson, Jr. (SM, 1941) in response to an appeal from Associate Provost Ellen T. Harris (Class of 1949 Professor Emeritus of Music), the Emerson/Harris Program offers merit-based financial awards for private study in music to students of outstanding achievement on their instruments in classical, jazz or world music. Each academic year, the Emerson/Harris Program awards Scholarships and Fellowships to nearly fifty students who commit to a full year’s study and participate in the musical life of MIT. Private teacher selections, made in consultation with the music faculty, may include instructors from MIT staff and throughout Greater Boston.
