Free Zimbabwean Music Workshop

Come join a free Zimbabwean music workshop with visiting musicians Moyo Mutamba, Jennifer Kyker, and Memory Makuri!  All instruments and instruction provided free-of-charge and appropriate for all skill levels.  Open to the entire MIT community and general public.  Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn from three amazing Zimbabwean music teachers!  Please arrive 10-15 minutes early, as the workshop will start promptly at 11am.

About the musicians: Dr. Moyo Mutamba is a professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada and is an expert on indigeneity and decolonization, as well as being well-versed in Shona music and culture.  Dr. Jennifer Kyker is an ethnomusicologist at the University of Rochester and is one of the most experienced US mbira players, having performed and taught mbira for over 15 years.  Memory Makuri is a world-renowned artist and one of few women who have forged careers in the Zimbabwean music industry.  She has performed with numerous Zimbabwean groups, including the legendary band, Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited.
