Japanese Pop Music: A Student Exhibition & Listening Party

Tuesday, April 14, 2026 | 7:30–9:00 PM Lewis Music Library

Join us for an evening celebrating Japanese popular music through the eyes and ears of MIT students. Students in 21M.299: Studies in Global Musics (Japanese Pop) will unveil an exhibition of original research posters, each exploring an album drawn from genres spanning the full arc of Japanese popular music from the 1960s to the present day.

Prof. Makoto Harris Takao will frame the evening with a brief introduction to the students' work and a look at how the class is collaborating with the Lewis Music Library to build its growing collection of vinyl records as a resource for the MIT community. Select students from the class will share reflections on their research, and all audience members are welcome to browse the exhibition and to chat informally with the student researchers about their posters.

Throughout the evening, DJ Deep Digs will be spinning tracks on a journey through Japanese pop music from City Pop of the 1980s to today.

Light refreshments will be provided. This is a free, public event — all are welcome.
