About the Performer

Kiera Tai is a senior at MIT studying Materials Science and Engineering. She has played piano since age five and currently studies with David Deveau as an Emerson/Harris Scholar. Previously, she studied with Zina Astrakhan and Tom Lohr in North Carolina. Kiera has won awards in a number of piano competitions, most notably receiving first prize in the 2017 NC Federation of Music Clubs Competition playing Chopin’s Second Scherzo and the 2016 Raleigh Piano Teachers Association Concerto Competition playing Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto.

At MIT, Kiera has enjoyed exciting musical collaborations through the Chamber Music Society, performing piano trios by Beethoven and Dvorak and piano quintets by Dvorak and (soon!) Dohnanyi. Kiera also serves as co-president of the MIT Ribotones, a music service club that plays at hospitals and assisted living homes. In 2020, she helped organize an MIT virtual performance series highlighting works by Black artists titled the Music Unites: Songs for Equity (MUSE) Project. Outside of piano, Kiera enjoys playing her flute, cooking, solving crossword puzzles, and eating large citrus fruits.

About the Emerson/Harris Program for Private Study

Funded by the late Mr. Cherry L. Emerson, Jr. (SM, 1941) in response to an appeal from Associate Provost Ellen T. Harris (Class of 1949 Professor Emeritus of Music), the Emerson/Harris Program offers merit-based financial awards for private study in music to students of outstanding achievement on their instruments in classical, jazz or world music. Each academic year, the Emerson/Harris Program awards Scholarships and Fellowships to nearly fifty students who commit to a full year’s study and participate in the musical life of MIT. Private teacher selections, made in consultation with the music faculty, may include instructors from MIT staff and throughout Greater Boston.
