About the Performer

Kyle Swanson ‘18 is an MEng student in computer science advised by Regina Barzilay. As an undergraduate at MIT, he double majored in computer science and mathematics with a minor in music. Kyle began studying flute in third grade with Joseph Piscitelli at Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale, NY, and he added piccolo in seventh grade. While at Hoff-Barthelson, Kyle participated in master classes with Mindy Kaufman, piccoloist of the New York Philharmonic, and with flutists Paula Robison, Gary Schocker, and Bart Feller. In 2010, he took part in a world-record-setting flute ensemble of more than 1,900 flutists led by James Galway. Kyle also participated in the New York State School Music Association Area All-State Orchestra on several occasions and was first piccoloist in the All-State Symphonic Band in 2013. At MIT, Kyle takes lessons with Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin through the Emerson Scholarship Program. Additionally, Kyle is a member of the MIT Symphony Orchestra and has participated in a number of other music groups including the MIT Wind Ensemble; the Chamber Music Society; the Pathos Ensemble, a student-led orchestra; the Institooters, a flute ensemble led by Sue-Ellen; the Ribotones, a music service club; and the Musical Theatre Guild Pit Orchestra.
