Synopsis: Nemorino, a poor and shy peasant, is in love with the beautiful and wealthy Adina. Adina, amused by his affections, plays hard to get and considers marrying the boastful Sergeant Belcore instead. Desperate to win her heart, Nemorino buys a “love potion” (really just cheap wine) from a traveling quack doctor, Dulcamara. Believing in the potion’s power, Nemorino suddenly acts confident, which ironically makes Adina jealous. When she realizes she truly loves him, she buys back his military contract so he won’t have to enlist. Eventually, she confesses her feelings and the opera ends happily with Nemorino and Adina united in love.
