Symphony No. 100 of Joseph Haydn is known as the “Military” Symphony. This is due to the presence of instruments that audiences would have equated with the Turkish military forces, such as cymbals, triangle, and bass drum. While these instruments are quite common in symphony orchestras now, they would have been quite shocking, even a little scary, to Haydn’s audience.
