Wuming Theater Club is proud to present "Das Kapital", our IAP 2020 production at the W97 theater. Das Kapital is a play written by renowned playwright Nick Rongjun Yu in a style that combines absurd comedy with real events and people. The director is Yuning Su, a graduate student in Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College.
Nick Yu explains his play in these words:
“In the past thirty years, China has never been able to avoid capitalism. It has long seeped into every aspect of our lives: government, economics, society, laws, beliefs, ideals. We have nowhere to run in the face of capitalism. […] This play expresses the relationship between capitalism and modern society, life and reality and deeply examines capitalism's characteristics, nature, and essence.”
Das Kapital reflects on lifestyles in contemporary China that have been distorted by capitalism. Our production modifies the setting and transplants the story to our theater club and MIT campus. As an absurdist comedy, it approaches serious questions about the intersection of life and capitalism through crazy plots and hilarious characters, inspiring laughter from beginning to end.
Performances in Chinese with English subtitles. Translation by Yangyang Guo and Katie Lu.
